With his election in 2013 as the 266th pope, Francis is the first Jesuit pope, the first pope from the Americas, the first pope from the Southern Hemisphere and the first pope born outside of Europe since the 8th century.
While popes can use their baptismal name after their election, most choose a papal name to honor a mentor, immediate predecessor, or a family member.
Many of the same names are used by different popes, but the current pope is the first to use the name Francis, chosen in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi.
