Dachshund is German and literally means “badger dog.” Often referred to by the derogatory names of Wiener Dog or Sausage Dog, this short-legged, long-bodied, hound-type dog breed of German heritage was developed to scent, chase, and flush out badgers and other burrow-dwelling animals. The miniature version was bred to hunt smaller prey such as rabbits.
Consistently ranking among the Top Ten Most Popular Dog Breeds, dachshunds can be great as guard dogs but not necessarily a good fit for families with small children. They tend to be loyal and friendly but can also be quite stubborn and irritable rascals.
